The Serious Business of Living One’s Dream
Have you ever asked someone how they’re doing and received the response, “Living the dream!” only to laugh it off as a sarcastic comment? Many of us have, but what if I told you that the person who said it may have been telling the truth?
When someone says they’re “living the dream,” they may not necessarily be living their best life, but that moment they’re in could be exactly what they had hoped for at one point. It could be a moment they’ve been working towards or one that brings them joy despite other hardships they may be facing.
Unfortunately, when we laugh off their response as sarcastic, we’re unintentionally judging their dream. We assume that they’re not truly happy with where they are in life and that their response is a way of masking their true feelings.
But what if we took the time to ask them about their dream instead? What if we listened to their response with an open mind and genuinely wanted to understand what makes them happy?
Living the dream doesn’t have to mean living a perfect life. It’s about finding joy in the moments we’re in, even if other areas of our lives are less than ideal. It’s about having something to strive for, even if we haven’t achieved all of our goals yet.
So the next time someone tells you they’re “living the dream,” don’t laugh it off as sarcasm. Take the time to ask them about their dream and listen to their response with an open mind. Who knows, maybe their dream is something you can help them achieve, or maybe it will inspire you to pursue your own dream.
Remember, living the dream is not a sarcastic comment. It’s a celebration of the small moments that bring us joy and hope for the future we’re working towards.
