How You Can Implement the 10x Rule

To start using the 10X Rule in your project management, you must adjust your attitude and strategy. Here’s a 90-day plan to help you get started. Remember, implementing the 10x rule in your life, requires a mindset shift. I don’t promise this will be easy but it is doable. And most importantly, I have faith that you can do it.

Remember as a project manager, you have the power to make amazing things happen.

Step 1 (0-30 days): Set 10X Goals: During the first 30 days, set 10X goals for your project. Think about how you can provide 10 times more value to your stakeholders and set a goal to achieve it. For example, if you typically deliver a project in six months, set a new goal to deliver it in just one month or if your team typically delivers a project with a budget of $500,000, set a new goal to deliver it with a budget of just $50,000. Only the sky is the limit!

Step 2 (30-60 days): Take Massive Action The next 30 days are about taking massive action towards your 10X goals. Try new things to help your team achieve 10 times more success. Think outside the box!

You can simplify the project plan to reduce complexity and streamline processes. This can help you deliver the project with a budget of just $50,000.

Or develop strategic partnerships with other stakeholders that can provide additional resources or expertise to help you achieve your 10X goals. You’d be surprised who and when in your immediate team or expanded team can help you achieve this goal.

Or conduct customer feedback surveys to gain insights into their needs and preferences. Use these insights to tailor the project to deliver 10 times more value to your customers.

Or create a continuous improvement plan that outlines steps to identify and eliminate waste, improve quality, and increase efficiency. This can help you achieve the 10X goal of delivering a project in one month or with a budget of $50,000.

Just like marathon runner needs to push themselves to the limit to achieve new personal best, you need to push yourself and your team to new levels of success.

Step 3 (60-90 days): Evaluating Progress and Adjusting The final 30 days should be focused on evaluating your progress towards your 10X goals and adjusting your approach as needed. Identify what’s working and what’s not, and make changes to your strategy as necessary.

Review project data to focus on successful strategies. Just as a chess player adjusts their strategy to their opponent’s moves, use data to adjust your approach for the best project results.

Final Thoughts

One of the most impressive examples of the 10X Rule in action in my opinion was during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic in China. In response to the sudden surge of patients needing medical attention, the Chinese government set a goal to build two large hospitals in just 10 days. During those days, I also was standing up a new product at work. Without getting into the details, I had a bold goal of launching my product in 90 days. A goal that seemed unachievable. I remember telling myself and my team, if the Chinese government can stand up hospitals in 10 days, what can stop us from standing up a product in 90 days?

Whether you launching a product or building new hospitals with bold targets as your goal, to achieve such goals, in my view, one doesn’t simply just work 10 times harder or faster than usual. People with bold goals, implement a 10X mindset, which means thinking beyond the conventional constraints of time and resources and taking massive action toward achieving the goal. I have done this a few times in my career and I can attest that it works.

By implementing the 10X Rule, project managers can achieve similar results in their work. For example, imagine a project manager tasked with launching a new product in a highly competitive market. Instead of setting a modest goal and hoping for the best, they could set a 10X goal of capturing 10% of the market share within the first year.

To achieve this goal, they would need to take massive action, such as investing in aggressive marketing campaigns, forming strategic partnerships, and continuously improving the product based on customer feedback. By following a 90-day plan and tracking progress towards the 10X goal, the project manager can achieve greater success than they ever thought possible.

That’s why in my 90-day plan I want you to take your time in your first 30 days and practice 10x goal setting, it can be intimidating but over days and weeks of practicing to challenge your imaginations you can overcome any fear or hesitation that might have been holding you back.
